Verified A'arif Fort

Saudi Arabia, Saudi Arabia

A’Arif Fort (also spelled Arif or A’arif) is a historic hilltop fort in the city of Hail in northwestern Saudi Arabia, known as the oldest historical building in Hail and an important landmark visible from almost anywhere in the city.

It was originally built in the 17th–19th century (sources give dates ranging from the 17th century to 1840) during the rule of the Al‑Ali family and later the Prince/Emirate of the region, using stone, mud and clay in a traditional military‑fort style, and it stands on Jabal Irf (or Jabal A’arif) on the southern side of Hail, overlooking the city and its surrounding farms and markets.

The fort is rectangular, about 40 meters long and 11 meters wide, covering roughly 440 square meters, and is a two‑story mud‑brick structure with around 30 watchtowers, thick defensive walls, large carved wooden doors, machicolations and a design that follows the natural slope of the mountain, with uneven floor levels inside.

Inside, the layout includes a main watchtower, a mosque, rooms, two open courtyards and a main entrance on the southern side that opens to a small courtyard leading to the central mosque and several corridors; historically it functioned as a military observation post to guard the southern approach to Hail, part of a ring of seven castles around the city that monitored armies and caravans.
