Aiud Citadel
Aiud, Romania, Romania
Aiud Citadel in Aiud, Romania, is a medieval fortress built by Saxon settlers in the 14th century on the site of earlier Dacian-Roman settlements, first documented in a 1293 privilege by Hungary's King Ladislaus IV though local tradition dates its initial watchtower to the 1241 Mongol invasion.
The irregular pentagonal enclosure spans about 350 meters with thick stone walls, nine guild-named defensive towers, two churches including a late Gothic Calvinist one from the late 15th century with a 64-meter battlemented tower later Baroque-altered, and remnants of a 16th-17th century royal palace amid expansions for protection against uprisings, conquests by Michael the Brave, Habsburg assaults in 1704-1717, religious wars of 1758-1761, peasant revolts in 1784, and the 1848 revolution.
Today this Transylvanian landmark stands as Aiud's main attraction, its preserved exterior and interiors offering insight into Saxon craftsmanship and turbulent history.
