Verified Al-Bayda

Rada'a, Al Bayda Governorate, Yemen

Al-Bayda Governorate is a central Yemeni region often called the country’s “geostrategic heart” because it borders eight other governorates, making it a key crossroads for trade and movement.

Within it lies the city of Rada‘ (also spelled Rada'a), which serves as the governorate’s current capital and was historically the capital of the Beda Sultanate from 1636 until 1930. Rada‘ is best known for the Al-Madrasa Al-Amiriyyah, a stunning 16th‑century Tahirid-era Islamic school founded in 1504 that is famed for its intricate stucco work, Quranic inscriptions and well-preserved architecture, and which has been on Yemen’s UNESCO Tentative List since 2011.

The governorate spans about 7,700 square kilometers of highlands and desert terrain with a cold desert climate, supporting roughly 900,000 people across 20 districts, many of whom rely on agriculture, livestock and small trade. Despite its strategic importance and rich cultural heritage, Al-Bayda has faced persistent poverty and political marginalization, and its central location has made it a focal point in Yemen’s recent conflicts.
