Al-Hamra Mosque
Kufa, Najaf Governorate, Iraq
The Al-Hamra Mosque, also known as the Yunus Ibn Matta Mosque, is a historic Twelver Shi'ite mosque and shrine located in Kufa, Najaf Governorate, Iraq.
Its origins date back to the 7th century CE during the time of Ali ibn Abi Talib, making it one of the oldest places of worship in Kufa. The mosque takes its name from the Hamra tribe, which settled in the area and was closely associated with Ali and his family. The complex is especially known for containing a shrine associated with the Prophet Yunus (Jonah).
According to local Shia traditions, Jonah was buried at this site before his remains were later transferred to Mosul. Over the centuries, the mosque also served as a center of religious learning and community life. The mosque underwent several renovations, was demolished during the Ba'athist era in 1991, and was rebuilt after 2003.
