Al-Qadmus Castle
Al-Qadmus, Syria, Syria
Al-Qadmus Castle is an ancient medieval fortress located in the mountain village of Al-Qadmus (also spelled Qadmus or Kadmous), approximately 65 kilometers northeast of the coastal city of Tartus in western Syria's Tartus Province, near Baniyas, and was historically a major stronghold for the Nizari Ismaili sect known as the Assassins for more than nine hundred years.
The castle was first acquired by the Assassins in 1132-33 and became one of a dozen strategic castles they controlled across Syria, including famous strongholds like Masyaf, Kahf, and Rusafa, serving as a crucial defensive position for the sect. Originally built on a rocky cliff with impressive views of the surrounding countryside, the fortress later came under Frankish (Crusader) control and was subsequently contested by various local Muslim powers throughout the medieval period.
Today, the castle exists primarily as ruins and ancient remnants, with only the castle gate, some walls, crumbling fortifications, arches, and doorways still standing, though many architectural elements have been reincorporated into modern homes in the village. The historical structure was severely damaged when Ibrahim Pasha destroyed it in 1838, and more recently, part of a rocky cliff fell near the castle during a deadly 7.8 magnitude earthquake from Turkey in February 2023, causing residential buildings on the site to collapse.
The village of Al-Qadmus itself is named after the Phoenician god Qadmus, whose ancient Syrian legend says he spread the alphabet and science from Syria to Greece, adding cultural significance to the location.
