Alara Castle
Turkey, Turkey
Alara Castle rises on a steep rocky hill above the Alara River in Alanya district, Antalya Province, southern Turkey, originally built during the Byzantine era and serving as the western outpost of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia from the 11th century.
In 1231, its lord surrendered it to Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I after his conquest of Alanya, transforming it into a key defense for Silk Road caravans stopping at the nearby Alarahan caravanserai 300-400 meters below.
The fortress, about 7 km from the Mediterranean and accessible via a challenging 120-200 step climb through hidden passages, features a small palace, bathhouse, cisterns, and walls at 200-500 meters elevation, now blending with scenic valleys for visitors.
