Alcantarilha Castle Wall Ruins
Alcantarilha, Portugal, Portugal
Alcantarilha Castle Wall Ruins in Alcantarilha, Portugal, date back to the 12th century when Arabs built initial stone defenses to protect the settlement along a vital inland route between Faro and Silves during the Islamic occupation of the Algarve.
Conquered by Christian forces under D. Paio Peres Correia in the 13th century amid King Afonso III's reign, the fortress saw major reinforcements that reshaped its oval layout, though it faced Moorish pirate raids in 1550 and 1559 due to incomplete walls started under King João III.
Further altered in the 16th century under King Sebastian for maritime defense, the ruins—now limited to scattered irregular stone stretches near modern buildings like the market—fell into decay after the 1755 earthquake and urban expansion, classified as a Public Interest Property since 1977.
