Algoso Castle
Portugal, Portugal
Algoso Castle is a medieval fortress atop Monte da Penenciada at 690 meters in Algoso parish, Vimioso municipality, Bragança district, northern Portugal's Trás-os-Montes, overlooking the Angueira and Maçãs rivers with panoramic views of surrounding serras. With prehistoric roots from Chalcolithic to Roman times, it was built late in Afonso I's reign by local lord Mendo Bofino, then donated by Sancho II in 1224 to the Knights Hospitaller, forming a key defensive line alongside Bragança and Miranda do Douro against León. Featuring a rectangular granite layout with corbel walls, a three-story square keep, Gothic arched access, machicolations, merlons, arrowslits, and vaulted cistern, it received charters from Afonso V in 1480 and Manuel I in 1510 before declining into ruins by the 18th century, now a Property of Public Interest.
