Alvor is a pretty coastal town in the western Algarve of southern Portugal, part of the municipality of Portimão and about an hour’s drive west of Faro.

It started as an old fishing village and still keeps a distinctly Portuguese feel, with a small historic centre, narrow streets, a centuries‑old church, and a modest castle site that now sits in the middle of the town. The town is built around a scenic estuary and a long stretch of golden sand beach backed by dunes, offering calm waters good for swimming and family holidays, along with beach bars, restaurants, and a relaxed atmosphere compared with larger resorts.

Alvor also serves as a handy base for exploring nearby towns like Portimão, Lagos, and the wider Costa Vicentina, while still feeling quieter and more laid‑back than the busier tourist hubs of the Algarve.
