Ankara Castle
Ankara, Türkiye, Turkey
Ankara Castle overlooks the old city from a hilltop in Turkey's capital, with fortifications tracing back to Phrygians in the 8th century BC and Galatians in 278 BC, later rebuilt by Romans, Byzantines after Persian destruction around 622 AD, Seljuks, and Ottomans.
It features an inner citadel of 350 by 150 meters with closely spaced towers and an outer wall with towers 40 meters apart, built from reused masonry in Byzantine and Seljuk styles, including saw-tooth battlements, a clock tower from 1885, and historic mosques like Arslanhane.
The site blends military history with Ottoman neighborhoods, offering panoramic views and once housing Turkey's first museum in 1921, now freely accessible via steep paths.
