Annaghkeen Castle is a medieval fortress located on the eastern shore of Lough Corrib in County Galway, Ireland.
Dating from the 13th century and recorded as early as 1324, it was associated with the powerful de Burgo (Burke) family, who used it to help control and defend their lands in the region. The castle was originally built as a rectangular stone keep with defensive features such as elevated entrances, thick walls, and internal stairways.
Later additions included a corner tower and extra living space, reflecting its continued use and adaptation over time. Although now a ruin, Annaghkeen Castle remains one of the more impressive medieval sites around Lough Corrib. Its lakeside setting, surviving stonework, and long history make it a valuable reminder of Galway’s medieval past and the influence of the Burke family in western Ireland.
