Aoba Castle
Miyagi, Japan
Aoba Castle, also known as Sendai Castle, was built in 1600 by the powerful feudal lord Date Masamune as the stronghold of the Sendai Domain in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. Perched atop Mount Aoba about 100 meters above the city of Sendai, the castle was strategically designed for defense, surrounded by natural barriers including cliffs and the Hirose River. Unlike many Japanese castles, Aoba had no central keep but was secured by four three-story watchtowers and high stone walls.
The main areas included the inner bailey (honmaru), second bailey (ni-no-maru), and third bailey (san-no-maru), with residences for the daimyo and his officials. Over its history, the castle endured multiple fires and earthquakes, with significant damage during World War II air raids that destroyed most of its structures.
Today, visitors can see reconstructed walls and a watchtower, the Gokoku Shrine dedicated to war dead, and a museum showcasing artifacts and virtual tours of the original castle. The site offers panoramic views of Sendai and commemorates Date Masamune’s lasting legacy as a major historical and cultural symbol in northern Japan.
