Aqaba, Jordan's only coastal city in Aqaba Governorate, sits at the northern tip of the Gulf of Aqaba on the Red Sea, serving as a vital port and economic hub since ancient times when it was known as Elath or Ayla, a key stop on trade routes for copper, spices, and pilgrims.

Captured by T.E. Lawrence and Arab forces in 1917 during World War I, it became part of modern Jordan in 1925 and grew into a Special Economic Zone since 2000, blending history with tourism through sites like the 16th-century Aqaba Fortress, medieval Islamic Ayla ruins, and vibrant coral reefs ideal for diving. 

With a hot desert climate featuring mild winters and scorching summers up to 50°C, its waterfront corniche, souks, and resorts attract visitors for water sports, while nearby Wadi Rum and Petra enhance its appeal as a gateway to Jordan's adventures.
