Archäologische Stätte Monkodonja
Rovinj, Croatia
Monkodonja is a well-preserved Bronze Age hillfort near Rovinj, Croatia, dating back to around 1850 to 1450 BC.
It was a large, fortified settlement with a defensive wall about 1 km long, around 3 meters wide, and at least 3 meters tall, built using Cyclopean masonry similar to Mycenaean architecture. The settlement was organized on three levels: the acropolis on the highest point where the ruling class lived, the upper town, and the lower town where farmers and herders resided. The people lived in houses made with wooden supports, mud walls, and thatched roofs, and engaged in farming, herding, hunting, and fishing. Workshops for crafts and metalworking were present, showing an advanced society involved in trade and production.
Archaeological finds include handmade pottery, bronze jewelry, amber beads, stone graves, and enigmatic tablets that indicate integration into a wider Bronze Age communication network across Europe. The settlement was abandoned around the 12th century BC after a destructive fire, and excavations have revealed its complex street layout, houses, storage rooms, and ritual caves nearby. Today, Monkodonja is an open archaeological park offering insight into prehistoric life and trade in the northern Adriatic region.
