Arco do Castelo de Vila Flor
Vila Flor, Portugal, Portugal
The Arco do Castelo de Vila Flor, also known as Arco de D. Dinis, is the sole surviving medieval gate from the defensive walls ordered built around 1295 by King Dinis in Vila Flor, Portugal, to protect the burgeoning settlement once called Póvoa d’Alem Sabor.
Measuring 3.5 meters wide by 4 meters high with a pointed arch flanked by remnants of a semicircular tower, it served as the south entrance to the fortified perimeter amid the town's growth fueled by Jewish settlers in crafts and agriculture before their 1512 expulsion under King Manuel I.
Classified as a Public Interest Monument, it stands as a testament to the 13th-century repopulation efforts post-Reconquista, with the castle likely once featuring a keep and four to five gates now lost to time.
