Ardee Castle, also known as St. Leger’s Castle, is a well-preserved medieval tower house in the heart of Ardee, County Louth.

Built in the 15th century by John St. Leger on the site of an earlier Norman castle, it served as an important defensive stronghold on the northern frontier of the English-controlled Pale. The castle played a role in several major historical events, including the Irish Rebellion of 1641 and the Williamite Wars, and was used as a headquarters by King James II before the Battle of the Boyne in 1690.

It later served as a prison and courthouse for many years, helping preserve the building through continuous use. Today, Ardee Castle is regarded as one of the largest fortified medieval tower houses in Ireland. Its imposing stone walls, corner towers, and prominent location on Castle Street make it one of County Louth’s most important and recognizable historic landmarks.
