The Askia Tomb in Gao, Mali, is one of the country’s most important historical and architectural landmarks.

Built in the late 15th century, it is believed to be the burial place of Askia Muhammad I, the renowned ruler who expanded the Songhai Empire into one of the largest and most powerful states in West Africa. The monument is famous for its distinctive pyramidal shape and traditional mud-brick construction, making it an outstanding example of Sudano-Sahelian architecture.

The complex includes the tomb, two mosques, a cemetery, and an open-air assembly area, reflecting both the political power of the Songhai Empire and the importance of Islam in the region. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004, the Askia Tomb stands as a symbol of Mali’s rich cultural heritage and remains an active place of worship and community life in Gao.
