Verified Assiniboine Park

Winnipeg, Canada, Canada

Assiniboine Park is Winnipeg's "emerald jewel," a massive 1,100-acre urban park that is actually larger than New York's Central Park and ranks as one of Canada's largest city greenspaces.

Designed by early Canadian landscape architect Frederick G. Todd in 1905 (who studied under Frederick Law Olmsted, Central Park's designer) and officially opened on Victoria Day 1909, the English-style park features tree-lined roadways, formal gardens, walking paths, open fields, and a duck pond.

The park houses Canada's oldest remaining zoo, established in 1908 starting with deer donated by locals and growing to 116 animals by the park's opening, plus the newest addition called The Leaf—a stunning glass conservatory opened in December 2022 with four biomes including a lush Tropical zone with towering palms and orchids, a fragrant Mediterranean biome with citrus and herbs, a Display House, and seasonal exhibits.

Other notable attractions include the historic 1908 Pavilion with its dance hall and clock tower, the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden filled with bronze artworks, a miniature steam train, multiple playgrounds including Nature's Playground, an outdoor theater for summer concerts, the Pavilion Gallery Museum, and one of Canada's largest urban forests—the 700-acre Assiniboine Forest nearby with woodchip trails home to deer, foxes, and over 80 bird species.
