Athclare Castle

Athclare Castle is a Tudor-era tower house near Dunleer in County Louth, built around 1550 for the Barnewell family.

It was constructed as a fortified residence in the English-controlled Pale, reflecting the need for security during a period of frequent unrest along Ireland’s eastern frontier. The castle is a three-storey limestone structure featuring defensive elements such as arrow loops, thick stone walls, a corbelled parapet, and fortified entrances.

Over the centuries, it was extended and adapted for changing domestic needs, while retaining much of its original character. Unlike many Irish castles that became abandoned ruins, Athclare Castle has remained in use for much of its history and is still partly residential today. Its survival, along with its architectural features and historical significance, has earned it protected status as an important heritage site in County Louth.
