Athenry Castle
Athenry, Ireland, Ireland
Athenry Castle in Ireland is a well-preserved medieval fortress built around 1237–1240 by the Norman lord Meiler de Bermingham.
It stands near a strategic ford on the Clareen River and features a large rectangular hall-keep originally designed with a hall on the first floor and storerooms below. The castle is notable for its strong defensive features such as thick base-battered walls, original 13th-century battlements with tall arrow slits, and an entrance originally accessed by an external wooden staircase for protection.
The hall’s entrance and window openings are adorned with detailed stone carvings of floral motifs in a distinctive local style called the "School of the West," which represents a transitional blend of Romanesque and Gothic art. In the 15th century, the battlements were incorporated into steeply pitched gables to support a new roof.
Athenry Castle offers an authentic glimpse into the life of medieval Norman lords and remains a key part of one of Ireland’s best-preserved medieval towns, with surviving parts of its original enclosure wall and a visitor center that presents its rich history.
