Auenstein Castle
Switzerland, Switzerland
Auenstein Castle is a medieval fortress rebuilt as a residential palace on a rocky hill above the Aare River in Auenstein, canton of Aargau, Switzerland, first constructed around 1307 by the Lords of Gowenstein.
Destroyed in 1389 during Habsburg-Swiss conflicts and later passing through owners like the Lords of Rinach and Hasfurter families under Bernese control, it remained in ruins for centuries until a private reconstruction in the 1850s created a habitable structure, followed by 1920s expansions that gave it its current form.
Today, classified as a Class B cultural property, it serves as the headquarters for a real estate company with an attached garage housing an automobile collection, overlooking the valley amid Aargau's scenic landscape.
