Aya Castle
Aya, Japan
Aya Castle, located in Aya, Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan, was originally built between 1331 and 1334 by Koshiro Yoshito, who named himself "Aya" after overseeing its construction. The castle was strategically important in the Sengoku period and changed hands among powerful clans including the Itō and Shimazu.
It was later conquered briefly by Toyotomi Hideyoshi before the Tokugawa shogunate mandated its destruction in 1615 under a policy limiting each domain to one castle. The main keep was reconstructed in 1985 from wood, inspired by early Sengoku period castles rather than exact historical designs.
The castle now operates as a museum displaying samurai armor, weapons, and historical documents, offering visitors a glimpse into its rich past along with panoramic views over the surrounding area.
