It dates back to the Nanboku-chō period and was a key stronghold of the Kitabatake clan, who controlled northern Ise Province. The castle sits on a 312-meter mountain overlooking Ise Bay and is part of the Ise-Shima National Park.

The ruins encompass two main fortifications separated by about 250 meters, with the southern portion called Hakumai Castle. Designated a National Historic Site in 1982 along with nearby fortifications, Azaka Castle represents important medieval military architecture from the region’s feudal era.
