Baitul Mukarram National Mosque
Dhaka, Dhaka Division, Bangladesh
Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, is the country’s national mosque and one of the largest in South Asia, located in the heart of the city near the central business district. Built in the 1960s and completed in 1968, it follows a modern design inspired by the Kaaba in Mecca, with a rectangular main prayer hall flanked by tall minarets and a spacious courtyard. The mosque can accommodate around 40,000 to 42,000 worshippers at a time, making it one of the biggest mosques in the world by capacity and a key spiritual and symbolic landmark for Bangladeshi Muslims. The complex includes prayer halls, gardens, fountains, and auxiliary facilities such as offices and a library, and its clean, monumental architecture reflects both traditional Islamic principles and a mid‑20th‑century modern aesthetic.
