Bakras Castle
Turkey, Turkey
Bakras Castle, also known as Bagras or Pagrae, is a ruined medieval fortress in the İskenderun district of Hatay Province, Turkey, nestled in the Amanus Mountains guarding the pass to Antioch.
Originally built around 965 AD by Byzantine Emperor Nikephoros II Phokas with aqueducts for water, it saw Arab, Armenian, and Crusader Templar occupations, renamed Gaston, before Saladin's 1189 siege and later Mamluk conquest in 1268. Its multi-level design with over 30 chambers, Frankish masonry, and strategic hilltop position reflects layered defenses, now offering explorers panoramic views amid evocative, freely accessible ruins.
