Ballycowan Castle is a historic fortified house located near Tullamore in County Offaly, Ireland.

The site originated in the late 16th century when Thomas Morres built a strong residence on the remains of an earlier Gaelic castle associated with the O'Molloy family. In 1626, Sir Jasper Herbert expanded the castle by adding a substantial five-storey tower, creating the impressive structure seen today.

The building combined residential comfort with defensive features such as thick walls, musket loops, bartizans, machicolations, and a fortified courtyard, reflecting the unsettled conditions of the period. The castle suffered damage during the conflicts of the 17th century and eventually fell into ruin. Despite this, its tall chimneys, tower, and surviving stonework remain striking landmarks in the Offaly countryside, offering a fascinating glimpse into Ireland’s plantation-era history and architecture.
