Banasur Fort
Bantari, Uttarakhand, India
Banasur Fort, located near Lohaghat in the Champawat district of Uttarakhand, India, is an ancient hill fort situated at around 1,859 meters above sea level.
According to Hindu mythology, it was built by Banasura, a powerful demon king and son of Bali. The fort is famous for the legend involving Banasura's daughter Usha, who fell in love with Aniruddha, the grandson of Lord Krishna. When Banasura imprisoned Aniruddha, Krishna engaged in a fierce battle with Banasura at the fort site, ultimately defeating him.
Though now in ruins, the fort still features remnants of sturdy stone walls and battlements, hinting at its medieval origin and strategic importance as a stronghold for local rulers, possibly from the Chand dynasty.
The location offers panoramic views of the Himalayan foothills, lush forests, and the Lohawati River originating nearby. The trek to the fort passes through scenic pine and oak forests, making it a popular spot for trekking, photography, and history enthusiasts.
The fort’s austere architectural style reflects its defensive purpose, with narrow pathways, rocky steps, and an old well believed to date back to the time of Banasura. Visiting this fort provides a blend of cultural heritage, mythology, and natural beauty, set in the serene Kumaon region of Uttarakhand.
