Bar Castle
Bar, Ukraine, Ukraine
Bar Castle in Bar, Ukraine, was originally constructed in 1537 as a stone fortress on elevated ground near the Riv River to defend the Podolia region against frequent Tatar invasions during Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth rule.
Redesigned in the 1630s by French engineer Guillaume Le Vasseur de Beauplan, it featured robust defensive walls, towers, and strategic positioning, enduring sieges including capture by Cossacks under Maksym Kryvonis in 1648 during the Khmelnytsky Uprising and multiple Ottoman occupations from 1672 to 1699.
Now standing in picturesque ruins surrounded by historic cathedrals like the Assumption Orthodox Cathedral and wooded trails, the site preserves Gothic and Renaissance elements as a key monument of Ukraine's border fortifications.
