Baseco Beach
Manila, Philippines
Baseco Beach is an urban beach located in the Baseco Compound area of the Port Area in Manila, Philippines.
Originally part of Engineer’s Island, a man-made island built in the 1960s for shipbuilding under the National Shipyard and Steel Corporation (NASSCO), the area was later acquired by the Bataan Shipyard and Engineering Company (BASECO).
The first settlers were shipyard workers and fisherfolk, but over time especially after the Marcos regime, Baseco became home to a growing population of urban poor families displaced from other parts of Manila. The beach is part of a reclaimed area and has seen redevelopment efforts such as Baseco Park, which uses recycled materials for improvements.
Despite its urban setting and historical challenges, Baseco Beach remains a local spot frequented by residents, though the water quality is a concern. The community is known for stilt houses and a dense population living in often challenging conditions, with recent initiatives aiming to improve housing and infrastructure.
