Bauskas Castle
Bauska, Latvia, Latvia
Bauska Castle is one of Latvia’s most important historic landmarks, located on a peninsula where the Mūsa and Mēmele rivers meet.
Originally built by the Livonian Order in the 15th century as a military fortress, it was designed to protect trade routes and strengthen control over the Semigallia region. In the late 16th century, a Renaissance-style palace was added, transforming the site into one of the main residences of the Dukes of Courland and Semigallia.
The castle served both military and administrative functions until it was heavily damaged during wars, particularly the Great Northern War, when it was blown up in 1706. Today, Bauska Castle combines restored palace sections with the ruins of the original fortress. Visitors can explore museum exhibitions, historic interiors, towers, and defensive walls while enjoying views of the surrounding rivers and countryside, making it one of Latvia’s most impressive cultural heritage sites.
