Beja Castle in Beja, Portugal, originated from Roman fortifications later rebuilt by King D. Dinis around 1310 after the Christian reconquest from Moorish rule, forming a pentagonal Gothic stronghold with robust walls, merlons, embrasures, and originally 40 towers including the nation's tallest 40-meter keep tower featuring ogival doors, twin horseshoe-arch windows, angular balconies, and cross-vaulted interiors.

Expanded through Manueline, medieval, and Mannerist phases with seven gates, barbicans, and later 17th-century bastions by engineers like Nicolau de Langres during the Restoration War, it anchored the city's defenses until classified a National Monument in 1910 following 20th-century consolidations. Today, its panoramic hilltop ruins blend Romanesque to early modern styles overlooking the Alentejo plain.
