Bichu Takamatsu Castle Ruins are the remains of a Sengoku-period castle in Okayama that became famous for one of the most unusual battles in Japanese history.

The castle was built in a low-lying marshland area, where surrounding wetlands acted as natural defenses and made direct attacks difficult. In 1582, Toyotomi Hideyoshi laid siege to the castle and used an innovative strategy by constructing a large dike that flooded the area, turning the castle into an isolated island.

The castle’s commander, Shimizu Muneharu, eventually surrendered and sacrificed himself to save his troops, making the siege a famous episode in Japanese history. Today, the site is a National Historic Site where visitors can see remnants of the castle, embankments associated with the siege, and memorials connected to the battle.
