Bil'che-Zolote
Ukraine, Ukraine
Bil'che-Zolote is a village in Chortkiv Raion, Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine, situated along the Seret River about 18 km from Borshchiv, renowned for its massive Verteba Cave, a gypsum karst system over 7 km long discovered in the 19th century containing Paleolithic artifacts from 20,000-30,000 years ago, Roman-era relics like Hadrian-period pottery, and human remains.
First mentioned in 1482, the settlement grew as a rural hub under Polish-Lithuanian, Austrian, and later Soviet rule, with a small Jewish community of 20-30 families engaged in agriculture, furriery, and crafts until their near-total destruction in the Holocaust around 1942, when survivors hid in local caves like Priest's Grotto alongside families from nearby Korolivka.
Today, part of Bilche-Zolote rural hromada with ancient Paleolithic sites and the UNESCO-nominated gypsum cave labyrinths, it attracts cavers and historians exploring its prehistoric, multicultural, and wartime legacies amid rolling Podolia landscapes.
