Birecik Castle
Birecik, Türkiye, Turkey
Birecik Castle, known as Beyaz Kale or the White Castle, rises on a limestone hill overlooking the Euphrates River in Birecik, Şanlıurfa Province, southeastern Turkey, with possible Assyrian origins around the 9th century BC and major 13th-century construction.
Repaired by Romans, Franks, Artuqids, Mamluks, and Ottomans, its towering 30-40 meter walls of cut stone, 12 bastions, and two surviving gates like Urfa and Meçan Doors provided strategic defense amid layered civilizations.
Now in ruins with a Mamluk inscription, it offers panoramic river views and local legends of innocence and last wishes, blending ancient history with scenic allure near the Birecik Dam.
