Bitchu Matsuyama Castle
Takahashi, Japan, Japan
Bitchu Matsuyama Castle is a historic mountain castle in Takahashi, Okayama Prefecture, and is famous for being the highest surviving castle in Japan, standing about 430 meters above sea level.
Originally founded in the 13th century, it developed over several centuries and played an important role in regional defense and administration. The castle is especially significant because it is the only original mountain castle in Japan that still retains its historic keep. Unlike many Japanese castles that were rebuilt, much of its main tower and related structures are authentic and have been preserved as Important Cultural Properties.
Today, Bitchu Matsuyama Castle is renowned for its dramatic setting above a “sea of clouds” that often appears on autumn and winter mornings, giving it the nickname “Castle in the Sky.” Visitors can explore the preserved castle grounds, enjoy panoramic mountain views, and experience one of Japan’s most remarkable historic landmarks.
