Buchach Castle
Buchach, Ukraine, Ukraine
Buchach Castle in Buchach, Ukraine, originated in the 14th-15th centuries as a medieval fortress built by the Buchacki family on a rocky hill above the Strypa River to defend against invasions during the town's founding under Polish rule.
Rebuilt in Renaissance style during the 16th-17th centuries by the Potocki-Movile family, it featured robust walls and towers as a key border stronghold that withstood Tatar, Cossack, and Ottoman assaults, including near-total destruction in 1676 before partial restoration.
Reduced to ruins after Ottoman sieges and 19th-century dismantling under Austrian partition for building materials, the site remains a scenic tourist attraction amid Buchach's Baroque landmarks like the town hall and churches.
