Budaniv Castle
Budaniv, Ukraine, Ukraine
Budaniv Castle in Budaniv, Ukraine, began as a wooden fortress around the late 16th century built by voivode Jakub Budzanowski on a hilltop, but it burned during Tatar invasions.
In the early 17th century, Jan Khodorovsky replaced it with a stone quadrangular stronghold featuring four round corner towers, high defensive walls, and Renaissance elements, designed to repel Cossack and Turkish assaults amid Podolia's border conflicts.
Repeatedly captured by Bohdan Khmelnytsky's forces and Ottomans before mid-18th-century restorations by the Potocki family converted its western section into a church, the ruins today include two towers, partial walls, and a courtyard now housing a psychiatric hospital as a preserved relic of eastern European fortifications.
