Burg Iberg
Wattwil, Switzerland, Switzerland
Burg Iberg is a partly ruined medieval castle overlooking Wattwil in the Toggenburg region of the canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland, constructed around 1240 by Heinrich von Iberg as a vassal of the Prince-Abbot of St. Gallen to guard key pass crossings over the Ricken and Laad valleys.
Briefly captured in 1249 by Count Kraft I of Toggenburg and again around 1290 by anti-Abbot Konrad von Gundelfingen with Habsburg support, it endured damage in the 1405 Appenzell Wars, a 1710 siege during Villmergen conflicts, and post-1805 secularization when repurposed as a farmhouse before partial demolition in 1835.
Acquired by Wattwil municipality around 1883, restorations from 1902 and 1965 rebuilt its roof and battlements, preserving the keep amid scenic hikes today.
