Burgruine Urgiz
Densbüren, Switzerland, Switzerland
Burgruine Urgiz is a medieval castle ruin located in Densbüren, in the canton of Aargau, Switzerland, perched on a steep rocky ridge at about 577 meters elevation.
Likely built in the 12th or 13th century, possibly by the Freiherren von Herznach or as a bishop's possession from Strasbourg, it featured a small core fortress with a surrounding ditch, ring wall, and round tower for defense. The site changed hands among nobles like the Herren von Uriol, Effinger, and Hasfurter before Bern acquired it in 1502, after which it fell into decay; in the 17th century, Bern built a watchtower there, later abandoned.
Today, conserved walls from 1996-97 restorations offer scenic views and a picnic spot amid the Densbüren forest.
