Verified Cambodia Landmine Museum

Near Siem Reap, Cambodia

The Cambodia Landmine Museum, located near Siem Reap about 25 kilometers from Angkor Wat, was founded in 1997 by Aki Ra, a former Khmer Rouge child soldier who has personally defused over 50,000 landmines and unexploded ordnance since the 1990s using rudimentary tools.

Housed in a purpose-built facility opened in 2007 after the original site near Angkor was relocated, it displays thousands of deactivated mines, bombs, and weapons from Cambodia's civil war and Vietnam War eras alongside educational exhibits on the Khmer Rouge atrocities and ongoing demining efforts.

Aki Ra also runs an adjacent relief center sheltering around 20 landmine victim children, providing them education and care funded partly by museum entry fees, while his NGO Cambodian Self Help Demining clears contaminated sites nationwide. Visitors, including tourists and school groups, tour the sober galleries, watch demining demonstrations, and learn about Cambodia's lingering postwar hazards in a poignant tribute to survival and humanitarian work.
