Caño Matías, also known as Cayo Matías, is a small, low‑lying mangrove island in the shallow waters of Jobos Bay off the southern coast of Salinas, Puerto Rico.

It sits a few hundred meters off the mainland and is part of a wider network of mangrove‑covered islets that form an important coastal ecosystem of roots, channels, and calm greenish waters.

The cay is known as one of Puerto Rico’s largest mangrove forests and a habitat for marine life, including seagrass beds and fish, and it has been designated as a protected natural area and a critical manatee‑habitat zone by local environmental authorities.

Visitors typically reach it by small boat tours from Salinas’ waterfront, motoring through the narrow mangrove channels to enjoy the still, almost‑pond‑like conditions, overhanging trees, and a sense of secluded tropical wilderness very close to the town.
