Capitancillo Island
Philippines , Philippines
Capitancillo Island is a small, uninhabited coral island located near Bogo City on the northeastern coast of Cebu in the Philippines, spanning about 600 hectares in the Camotes Sea.
This protected marine sanctuary features crystal-clear blue waters, tiny white sandy beaches, and a diverse underwater ecosystem perfect for snorkeling, diving, and kayaking. The island is home to three recognized dive sites—Ormoc Shoal, Núñez Shoal, and the southwest wall—with depths ranging from 30 to 50 meters showcasing large gorgonian fans, puffer fishes, and schools of fusiliers.
A historic 25-meter-tall white steel lighthouse built in 1905 stands on the island, flashing three white lights every ten seconds and adding to its unique charm. There are no stores, accommodations, or permanent facilities on the island, so visitors must bring their own food, beverages, and camping equipment like tents for overnight stays. The island is accessible via a 15-to-45-minute boat ride from connecting points in Bogo City such as Polambato Port, Nailon Wharf, Marangog Cove, and Odlot Hideaway.
According to local folklore, the island was once a Spanish trading ship captained by Basilio that was transformed into a rock by an offended chief over 400 years ago after the captain insulted the datu. The best time to visit is during the dry season from November to May for optimal diving and swimming conditions.
