Carpathian Biosphere Reserve Chornohirskyi Reserve Massif
Hoverla, Zakarpattia Oblast, Ukraine, Ukraine
The Chornohirskyi Reserve Massif of the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve is a strictly protected area on the southern slopes of the Chornohora range in Zakarpattia Oblast, ranging from about 700 metres up to 2 061 metres above sea level and including Mount Hoverla, the highest peak in Ukraine. Covering roughly 16 000 hectares within the larger UNESCO‑listed Carpathian Biosphere Reserve, it protects a full altitudinal sequence of Eastern Carpathian ecosystems, from foothill forests through extensive beech and spruce woods to subalpine meadows and rocky alpine grasslands, hosting rich biodiversity adapted to a moderately cool, very humid mountain climate. As part of the reserve’s network of separate massifs, Chornohirskyi plays a key role in conserving near‑natural landscapes around Hoverla and in supporting scientific research, environmental monitoring and carefully regulated nature-based tourism such as marked hiking routes, while core zones remain strictly off-limits to preserve their wild character.
