Carrigaholt Castle is a well-preserved 15th-century tower house located at the mouth of the River Shannon in County Clare, Ireland.
Built around 1480 by the MacMahon clan, it served as their fortified residence and occupied a strategic position overlooking Carrigaholt Bay and the estuary. The castle played an important role in several historical conflicts, including events connected to the Spanish Armada and regional power struggles in the late 16th century.
It later passed into the hands of the O’Brien family and remained inhabited for centuries before becoming a historic monument. Today, Carrigaholt Castle is recognized as a National Monument and is one of the finest surviving tower houses in County Clare. Its impressive five-storey structure, defensive features, and scenic coastal setting make it a significant reminder of Ireland’s medieval past.
