The present structure is closely associated with the former Cahir Bridewell, a castellated town jail built between 1813 and 1816, which incorporated elements of the older fortifications into its design. Designed to resemble a medieval fortress, the building features towers, battlements, and a spiral stone staircase.

During the 19th century it served as a prison, particularly during the Great Famine, before closing as a jail in 1878. Today, Carrigeen Castle is known for its unusual blend of military, prison, and residential history. Over the years it has been restored and adapted for hospitality use, making it one of the most distinctive historic landmarks in the Cahir area.
