Castelo de Abrantes
Abrantes, Portugal, Portugal
Castelo de Abrantes is a medieval fortress in Abrantes, Santarém district, central Portugal, atop a rocky hill overlooking the Tagus River, with roots possibly in a Lusitanian hillfort conquered by Romans around 130 BCE and later fortified by Moors.
Conquered from the Moors in 1148 (or 1118) by King Afonso Henriques during the Reconquista, it was integrated into the Templar defensive line along the Tagus, featuring Romanesque origins with Gothic additions, including cylindrical towers, a central quadrangular keep damaged in the 1531 earthquake, and remnants like the northeast weapons portico.
Rebuilt in the late 17th century by King Pedro II into a Vauban-style bastioned fortress with lowered medieval walls and half-bastions added in 1704—known as the "key to Estremadura"—it includes the Baroque Paço dos Condes de Abrantes from 1530, expanded with a grand 11-arched loggia, and the Gothic Church of Santa Maria do Castelo now a museum. Today, it stands as a national monument offering panoramic views and historical exhibits.
