Castelo de Alcobaça
Alcobaça, Portugal, Portugal
Castelo de Alcobaça in Alcobaça, Portugal, is a medieval fortress rebuilt around 1147 by King Afonso Henriques on earlier Roman and Moorish fortifications atop a 70-meter hill overlooking the Baça River, initially to shield the nearby Cistercian monastery and local population from Almohad raids during the Reconquista.
Expanded in the 12th-13th centuries under King Sancho I with Romanesque-Gothic walls, seven quadrangular towers, a prominent western keep facing the monastery, and a 14th-century barbican by Abbot D. Frei João de Ornelas, it endured Moorish assaults in 1191-1195, a 1422 earthquake repaired in 1424, and further reinforcements until declining after the 1755 Lisbon quake.
Now reduced to evocative ruins as a Public Interest Building, it complements the adjacent UNESCO-listed Alcobaça Monastery with its irregular organic plan, limestone masonry, and historical role safeguarding one of Portugal's richest monastic legacies.
