Castelo de Alenquer
Alenquer, Portugal, Portugal
Castelo de Alenquer in Alenquer, Portugal, originated as a Muslim fortress conquered in 1148 by King Afonso I during the Reconquista, later receiving charters in 1212 from Infanta Sancha and in 1302 from King D. Dinis, who oversaw major Gothic expansions.
Rebuilt around 1350-1385 with an oval plan, it features irregular curtain walls topped by rectangular merlons, three rectangular towers including the imposing 18-meter Torre da Couraça linked by a corridor to guard a vital spring, and a northwest keep adjoined to the walls amid two enclosures protecting the urban core.
Besieged by Castilians in 1384 and damaged by the 1755 earthquake, its remnants—now integrated into the hillside town near the Jewish quarter and Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição—form a national monument blending Islamic origins, Gothic defenses, and scenic views over the region.
