Castelo de Alpalhão - vestígios
Alpalhão, Portugal, Portugal
Castelo de Alpalhão vestígios in Alpalhão, Portugal, was founded around 1300 by King D. Dinis under the Knights Templar, later transitioning to the Order of Christ, as a strategic fortress defending the Tagus River's right bank near the Spanish border.
Extensively reformed in the late 15th-early 16th century by commander Fernão da Silva with a sub-quadrangular plan, circular towers adapted for early artillery, a residential keep tower, and three levels of firing slits, it integrated with regional defenses.
Severely damaged in 1704 during the War of the Spanish Succession by Franco-Spanish troops, further eroded by the 1755 earthquake, its remnants were quarried by locals for urban expansion, leaving only scattered wall fragments supporting the clock tower and private properties by 1940.
