Castelo de Assumar
Portugal, Portugal
Castelo de Assumar in Assumar, Portugal, was built in 1332 by King Afonso IV, son of D. Dinis, on a plateau between Alegrete and Monforte along the right bank of the Caia River, as a medieval walled settlement for defense.
The fortress featured robust walls enclosing the ancient village, with a commemorative plaque dated 1370 noting its construction under Afonso's lordship by master Francisco. Damaged in 1701 when Spanish forces mined and ruined the walls during conflict, it was promptly repaired but has since vanished entirely, leaving only a short ruined eastern wall fragment and the relocated plaque on the matriz church's south facade.
